Mountains of Sand

Lots of it. We had a long day traveling from Amman to Petra along the King's Highway. What stunning scenery. We went around several major dried up river gorges. We visited Madaba to begin with, which is renowned for its mosaics, and the main attraction is a Byzantine (circa 500AD) mosaic of the world as it was known then, centred on Jerusalem (extra). Incredible detail.
A visit to Mount Nebo, lots of scenery photo stops and a tour of Shobak Castle, a hilltop fortress established by the Crusaders and eventually claimed, after an 18 month siege, by Saladin. Then a stop off at Little Petra, which I've never heard of, and just a taster of things to come tomorrow (extra). An early start in the morning with a guide meeting us at 6.30am to show us the Siq, Treasury and other highlights of Petra before leaving us in our own to explore.
