to 1886 the Pink and White Terraces on the shores of Lake Rotomahana were considered to be the the eighth wonder of the world and attracted tourists from far and wide.  When Mt Tarawera  erupted on 10th June 1886 Lake Rotomahana also erupted and the Terraces were lost. It has been thought that if any remained they were 60 metres deep at the bottom of the Lake.  However new research is exploring the theory that the terraces did survive and are buried 10 - 15 metres below layers of mud and volcanic ash on the edge of the Lake. Preparations are underway to carry out radar imaging of the area.  The photo is of a mural depicting the terraces on the side of one of the shops in town.
