Dollar Academy was founded by Captain John McNabb, a local lad who went to sea as a boy and made his fortune as a shipping owner, hence the ship detail on one of the Academy gates.  He bequeathed a portion of his fortune to establish "a charity or school for the poor of the parish of Dollar where I was born".  Wonder what McNabb would make of the present day pupils of Dollar Academy, very few of whom could be described as either "poor" or "born in Dollar".
