The Ophelia Effect

MONDAY

As Ireland and the north and western parts of the UK prepared to be battered by the hurricane-force winds of storm Ophelia here in West Yorkshire this morning we were subjected to a yellow sky and a red sun.

Apparently, this is due to the storm dragging in tropical air and dust from the Sahara together with particulates from forest fires in Portugal and Spain. The dust causes the shorter wavelength blue light to be scattered, making it appear red. It was quite eerie.

I took this shot at lunchtime when I nipped out for a haircut.
