Aberford Almshouses

Aberford Almshouses are situated on the west side of Bunkers Hill,  Great North Road, Aberford , south of the village. They were built to the designs of George Fowler Jones on behalf of the Gascoigne sisters, Elizabeth and Mary Isabella, who lost both their brothers, Thomas and Richard Silver and their Father Richard Oliver Gascoigne in 1843 and so had the almshouses built as a memorial. Four, two-story residences flank the central tower and at any one time the 8 units supplied accommodation for 4 male and 4 female retired estate workers. At the south end of the building, left, there was a chapel which was in use from 1845 until 1976. At the north end, right, there was a refractory. The almshouses were vacated by the residents in 1976 and are now converted for business use and known as “Priory Park”
The local hunt used to gather at the front in years gone by, I think they still have a boxing day meet but further down the village (I don't hold with the hunt or any form of animal killing in this way)
