Beneath Biscay

Another Venice

Arrived in Aveiro where we're staying for a couple of nights on our slow return trip from Sagres to Gijón. Nice to be back in Aveiro, we were here a few years ago and enjoyed it very much. It's called Portugal's Venice because like Venice it's set in a lagoon and the city itself has canals, navigated by boats that do bear a passing resemblance to gondolas although larger and more robust. These boats, known as moliceiros were originally used to transport salt and seaweed, but are now used mainly for tourists like us.

Having been in Venice for the first time only a few weeks ago there is not of course any comparison, but that doesn't detract from Aveiro.

One of our important tasks this evening was to locate a restaurant where we had a delicious fish risotto 'risoto de peixe'. We were successful and found the restaurant 'O Legado da Ria', near the fish market. Will be returning tomorrow for a repeat order.
