A Collector of Oddities

Red sea glass

I have been keen to find some red sea glass since finding out that it is one of the rarest colours to find. Lucky me then that on a recent foray, I found not one but two pieces of red, and both from different sources.

Most sea glass comes from bottles and red has never really been used much for bottle making, hence the rarity. A lot of red sea glass is likely to have come from warning lights of some kind and can be recognized as it is very bright in colour and is shaped to provide maximum reflection as can be seen from the top piece. The other piece has clearly come from a bead as it has a section through the middle On turning it over, the bead must have been faceted as the facets can still be seen though worn quite smooth.
