Roman Fort

This is the remains of Ambleside Roman Fort situated at the most northerly point of Lake Windermere.
It was probably built during the reign of the Emperor Hadrian, 117 to 138 A.D.
Little is known about the Fort’s history but finds suggest it was still occupied in the fourth century and beyond. Apart from an armoury and administrative buildings there are the foundations of two large granaries. It is possible that it supplied Roman troops who occupied the Lake District and protected routes north.
