Selfies from the Brink

The Second Day

On the second day, we ate and drank.
Our prayers had not been returned to sender that night. We were alarmed.
"What happened up there?" we wondered.
"It might be a celestial holiday", someone suggested.
"Is it possible that we lost count of the days?" someone asked. And added: "Maybe it's the seventh day already."
"The saints are resting!" someone exclaimed hopefully.
But everyone knew that we had used our first finger only yesterday to count the days.
We looked at our hands. Nine fingers remained in their original position. Only the first finger of the left hand was bent. We knew our math.
We then turned to metaphysics and discussed the possibility of a cosmic disruption of synchronicity between heaven and earth.
No one dared to say what everybody thought. The saints had read our prayers. The mere thought of it sent shivers down our spines.
On that second day, the sun shone even brighter.
