American great egret

So much like our New Zealand white heron or Kotuku. Spent an enjoyable hour or so with this guy watching some unusual behaviour - or at least something I'd never seen a heron do before. Every now and again he would fly slowly over the water and try to fish something from the water mid-flight. We both missed ... I never saw him catch anything, and I didn't ever manage to catch a photo of him trying. But at least here you can see the splash from the water behind.
