A Puzzle

I am told that this is the work of Sycamore Bark Beetles.

Although I have asked Professor Google and searched Wikipedia, I cannot find our why or how they do it or what the beetles scientific name is.

If there is anyone out there with this esoteric knowledge I would be glad to hear about it.
