Sondela Guesthouse

This is where I've been staying for the three nights of my short visit to Bulawayo. The house was built by an English supermarket magnate in 1938 - bizarrely, given its location, with a fireplace in every room. Rodney, the current owner's family bought the house in 1966 after the magnate's wife refused to stay a day longer following a shooting in the road outside. It's a charming and relaxing place to stay. Rodney and his delightful staff are very welcoming, and the house is adorned with hundreds of fascinating nicknacks. There's a full sized snooker table and an golf themed 'honesty' bar where you help yourself to a drink and write it down in the book on the counter. And, as I posted a couple of days ago, there's even a dog called Buddy!
