The Whys Man

Rowing, Rowing, Rowing...

Visiting Lourdes Primary School in Glasgow today to discuss how pupils finding out about George Wyllie and creating their own artwork in response, and writing poems about it, and ideas not yet thought of, might become part of the school's 'Scotland Week'. Lots of ideas and it's just the start.

Primary 4 has a fascination with Vikings and ships. I loved their ship which you encounter at the very top of the stairs, its sail seemingly tossed in the wind and the figurehead blown back.

Vikings? Ships? Paper boats? Familiar Wyllie themes? As he sang himself...

Rowing, Rowing, Rowing,
When adverse winds are blowing...
What else could a Viking do?

The school's not very far from the Clyde and the idea of seeing lots of paper boats made by the pupils being launched on the river, was one that struck a chord, so we're looking forward to the launch of the Lourdes Fleet.

(I came across a great blip of a Viking ship George Wyllie created with pupils from Campbeltown Grammar, a scul?ture now at the harbour.)
