Monotype Model D

Before Monotype Corp were known for their typefaces they built typesetting machines. This is the keyboard of a Monotype Model D (1896) at the wonderful Bradford Industrial Museum. The machine was split into two parts, the keyboard component produced a punched paper tape which was fed into the second part of the machine which would then cast the type from hot metal. The split between the two allowed the text to be corrected before casting.

See extras for the pneumatic paper punch.

(A couple of other photos from the museum added for good measure.)
