In 1951 in her book The Unsophisticated Arts the artist Barbara Jones wrote All Hallow's Eve once used up the last tough turnips or pumpkins ...I am told that this custom, almost dead here, survives more strongly in America.

This year Andy Hamilton, the comedian and writer, said he thought Hallowe'en was the best festival for the environment as thousands of people all over the country switch off their lights and pretend to be out.
