The herring are running

It was a race with the seals to haul this lot in, said the fisherman, they took as many as we did and they're still out there eating them - one of our nets came up completely empty.

First come, first served. At £5 a dozen (to people) these silver darlings are a fantastic bargain even if you have to gut them yourself. It's also satisfying to think that the old quay has seen  herrings landed and sold here, in far greater number,  for hundreds of years. Nevertheless, experienced though the old fisherfolk were, their methods of capture were paltry compared to the astounding techniques employed by orca whales as revealed in Blue Planet 2  a couple of days ago. If you can do watch this incredible series which is airing in the UK now - possibly David Attenborough's final masterpiece.
