U.S. Coast Guard

On our way home after Tom's chemo, we stopped at the Port of Milwaukee to get some pictures of a ship called the "Federal Asahi"--a Great Lakes ship that carries dry goods. It was docked in front of the cement factory on the Milwaukee River, so we're thinking that's what it was taking on board. Next to the Port is a small Coast Guard Station, and as we passed it, we saw this large Coast Guard ship docked where the Lake Express Catamaran is usually docked. Neither of us have ever seen one this big docked there, so we pulled in so I could take a couple pictures of it. It's the USCG # 30--the "Mackinaw"--a 240 foot vessel built in 2005 as a heavy icebreaker for operation on the Great Lakes. In addition to it's ice breaking capabilities, it can also serve as law enforcement and for search and rescue missions. I liked both ships, so put the Federal Asahi in the extras, along with a shot of a railroad car being filled with salt & to the left of the RR car, another cargo ship, the "Alpena" docked along the river. :))
