THE CAMBRIDGE REFUGE.

This rather faded sign is set into a wall behind Christ's church. It says
'THIS WALL AND THE GROUND ON WHICH IT STANDS BELONG WHOLLY TO THE CAMBRIDGE REFUGE JULY1841. THIS STONE WAS REPLACED MARCH 10 1881.'.......The female refuge which was first established in East Road 1838, was set up to...."afford females who have been leading a sinful course of life and express a desire of returning to the path of virtue. A temporary refuge where they may be sheltered from temptation, be provided with proper employment, receive religion and other useful instruction" Most were trained for domestic service. The building was later turned into flats and I noticed a new retirement development behind the wall, so I don't know if the refuge still stands as it was private.
