Immigrant from Australia

Rather like my forebears, the ancestors of this Eastern Rosella arrived in New Zealand as part of a planned migration. Rosellas were introduced to New Zealand, mostly in the north of North Island around Auckland, in the early part of the 20th Century. They are well established in this part of the country. In theory they might outcompete the native parrots, and there is some concern about the potential for damage to orchards.

Unlike my ancestors, the original rosellas were brought here without their consent. Mine participated in the building of the Breadalbane on which they then sailed from Nova Scotia, and after rejecting Tasmania arrived in Waipu. There were six boats in the migration (during the 1850s), and a strong Scottish heritage was established in Waipu, spreading out to Northland and Auckland. The Scottish ancestors of our new Deputy Prime Minister (Mr Winston Peters) were also on the Breadalbane.
