Blackbirds in a Pumpkin...

This huge pumpkin is carved and painted to illustrate the song, "Sing a Song of Sixpence":
Four and twenty blackbirds,
Baked in a pie.
When the pie was opened,
The birds began to sing;
Wasn't that a dainty dish,
To set before the king?

The occasion is the Damariscotta Pumpkinfest and Regatta, which takes place in Damariscotta, Maine every year for a week in the fall. The largest pumpkins are submitted to a contest, weighed and put on display in the town (the largest are over a thousand pounds). Today was the day when they are painted and carved--just one of many events which take place during the week--including a race between motorized pumpkins on the river.

That was this morning. We then drove on to Portland ME for lunch and then west to Tamworth New Hampshire, where we are staying in a family house--our stay in August began here.
