Black Sand Beach

Deep inside Wilpattu National Park at the edge of the country lay the only black sand beach in Sri Lanka. At the base of Kudiramalai Point is a small beach area with black sand which is a result of coral decay. I kept digging in the beach to see whether it's just a layer of black sand on the surface, but this was not the case. The entire areas' beach is filled with black sand.

Several meters away from this black sand beach is the place where Sinhalese civilization began. King Vijaya of India is said to have landed here, which is also called as "Thambapanni". In this area & in the surrounding vicinity, the sand is of copper colour, thus giving the above name.

You can also reach this area by taking the dusty Puttlam - Mannar road which is a very basic, muddy road. But you would have to lookout for the correct turn off to visit the black sandy beach.
