Sgwarnog: In the Field

Nearly

Well, nearly the FA Cup story of the day but not quite.

Guiseley have never progressed beyond the First Round of the FA Cup and are currently struggling near the foot of the National League. Accrington Stanley are riding high at the top of League Two, it is imbalances like this which make, for me, the more interesting cup ties.

For the opening ten minutes there was a difference in class, and Stanley had a clear chance to score, what proved to be their best chance of the match. Guiseley settled into the game though, and by the end of the half it was the Accrington goal that was under more pressure.

Both goalkeepers made important saves  and Guiseley went close on several occasions, but a goal could not be found and so there will be a replay at Accrington. I don't think Guiseley are out of this yet though, and at the very least they are in tomorrow's draw for the second round.

UK folk can see brief highlights here.

Coincidentally, my year ago blip was also a First Round FA Cup tie, which also featured Accrington Stanley. On that day they slayed the giants of Bradford at Valley Parade, so Guiseley have already out-performed their grander near neighbours.
