Mr Toad

was not very happy to have his compost bin home turned over today.  My second bin contained a family of rats and they had a splendid nest of dried leaves and a cache of about 30 snails in an adjacent hole in the compost.  Some shells had been cracked and emptied - I had no idea rats ate snails and if they do should they not be encouraged to hang around the garden in the same way as we'd like a hedgehog to visit?  Mr Toad was carrying a tiny snail on his back which was cunningly placed to avoid being eaten!
