Sunbeams

Mesopotamia 1916

In memory of Reginald Wilson Fox of 6th Bn Devonshire Regiment who died on 3rd March 1916 in the campaign.  99 per cent of those killed were from India but only the Indian officers' names were noted.  There is now a movement to identify the many thousands whose names have not been recorded.  The Basra Memorial and Cemetery were attacked after Sadan Hussein's regime and 4000 headstones have been completely decimated and the names removed.

The metal ring in the photograph was found amongst a relative's belongings.  It has a little etching of a building with a palm tree and on the back is written Bagdad 1919.  Someone from the family must have gone out there afterwards or it was sent to them as a memento.
