Causey Arch

Causey Arch is the world's oldest surviving Railway Bridge. It was built in 1725-1726 by a group of coal pit owners to transport coal 6 miles down to the river Tyne at Newcastle. For a few years over 900 wagons of coal a day rumbbled over this bridge. After a pit fire and subsequent lack of use the bridge soon fell into disrepair but was restored to its former glory in 1981.
