the art of cracking a seed

The Mountain Chickadees have a flight pattern for landing on the feeder on my back porch. First they take off from the pine tree to the west, and land on the peach tree to the north. Then they zoom into the feeder, snatch a seed, and go back to the pine tree to crack it. I don't know why they don't just cut out the trip to the peach tree!
