Sowing tutorial for the teachers-to-be

So now that the sanitary pad project (as an addition to the Girl Child Project) is well underway, it's  important to ensure it's continuity once Aine and Sandy leave.

Here you can see Aine in a small workshop that herself and Sandy ran with a small group of the senior women in the factory. The purpose of this was to ensure they all know how to sow the design ahead of helping out with showing the bigger classes of girls on Saturdays. Of course, this is also preparation for when Aine and Sandy leave - these women will become the teachers and carry the initiative forward so the next group of girls to come through Wells For Zoe will also benefit from it.

Quick info from Sandy and Aine's research:

The cheapest available disposable sanitary pads in Mzuzu would cost 6,000 kwacha per person per year (with many of our girls living in absolute poverty - this is a luxury way beyond reach).

The design they are using was in fact created by a Malawian woman.

Materials used: Local chitenje cloth, micro-fibre toweling, thin layer of plastic, button and elastic.

Unit cost: 1 euro for one of the pads which can be used time and time again.
