Archeologie Magazine

Yestermorning my sweetheart called me from Crete to tell me he's received 5 of these magazines from Holland via the postman.
It's the Dutch 2 montly magazine "Archeologie Magazine" nr. 5/2017 in which an article of his hand and pix from us both (and my translation) is published. It tells about the Cretan Middle Ages, when the Venetians had Crete as one of their colonies and the Cretans were allowed to built their little churches, chapels over the island  = the Byzantine churches with indoors the decorations of frescoes on their walls. Those frescoes are like art for the illiterates (like comics for children are) and they are to tell the holy story of Christ and of how to behave well in life, coz if you don't you'll end up in hell ! Hence the title of the article with "Hidious Icons in a paradise on Earth"
The Venetians did have brought courts and soldiers to police to the island, but that's on the Nothern site of the island with Rethimnon, Iraklion and Chania, not in the remote villages on the mountains and shorelines of the South and East and West of the island. The lawkeepers could not come on instant to settle a fight or dispute or resolve some crime. Logistics then were not like now.... and even now! I have seen how slow ambulances and policecars move over the mountainous roads... simply  impossible to pick up top speed there!
Well I got my copy of the magazine today from a bookshop that sells it and will have it for keeps and reading, as it contains lots more of interesting articles about history, archeology etc.

for all Dutch Blippers... Archeologie Magazine nr. 5.2017  à € 6,95... zoek dan ff op hun www.site welke boekshop het wél verkoopt (lang niet alle winkels/Bruna's)
