Tarawera Times

Community challenge: Your local architecture.

The message about this challenge really got me thinking about our lake architecture. We live on the shores of Lake Tarawera where there are about 400 residences, and only about 20% are full time permanent dwellings (like us!) The rest are holiday homes, or a "bach" as we call them in NZ.
Our close neighbours' first bach was just a shed and an old caravan where they holidayed for a number of years before building. Rotorua architects designed the building to create a holiday feel, like camping where all the rooms open out onto a very wide covered deck, there is no hallway. It is a very innovative and different design and has won a number of national awards and also been featured in magazines and on TV.
There is a difference in opinion about the bach by the locals, but I really like it and it works so well for the family. It certainly pushes boundaries about what a holiday home should be like.
Many thanks to Alsacienne for running this really interesting challenge.
