Budapest: Day 5

"From Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic, an iron curtain has descended across the Continent. Behind that line lie all the capitals of the ancient states of Central and Eastern Europe. Warsaw, Berlin, Prague, Vienna, Budapest, Belgrade, Bucharest and Sofia, all these famous cities and the populations around them lie in what I must call the Soviet sphere .... " Winston Churchill 1946.

Today we have had a day of extremes. In the morning we visited the "House of Terror" a museum dealing with the great suffering of the Hungarian people at the hands of the Hungarian fascists the Arrow Cross, the German Nazis and then the Soviets. The photograph is of a sculpture in the street outside the museum representing Churchills' infamous iron curtain.
A 10 minute walk and we entered another, magical world, the Budapest Opera House, to enjoy an exceptional tour ending with a short concert of 3 arias.
