Airthrey Castle- Stirling University

We walked around Stirling University loch this afternoon in glorious sunshine.
This is a popular walk with the local community as well as students and staff.

Opened in 1967 on the site of Airthrey Castle, this is the first new Scottish university to be built since Edinburgh University in 1582.

The castle was built in 1791 to a design by Robert Adam for the evangelist Robert Haldane whose family had owed the estate since 1759.

Today it houses the Law School.

In the foreground you can see the deep bunkers used by the golf students for this is one of the few places in the UK where you can get degree in golf.

This is not an easy option.
Competition is fierce and you need to be playing off scratch to get a place and it does have a strong academic component too in the form of general sports studies.
