Hitchcock moment.

For no apparent reason about 20 of these birds (Jackdaws I believe ) arrived in the road this morning. They investigated the road, pavement, kerbs and garden walls before flying off only to return a few hours later and carry out the same investigation. Can anyone explain this behaviour?
