LANGBAN TARPAN

TRIBUTE TO THE ANCESTORS

The Manipuri month of Langban (September-October) is commemorated as the period for paying tribute to the begone ancestors by their offsprings. The eldest living family member prepared the offerings consisting of rice, seasonal fruits, etc. all chopped and soaked in water - placing them upon a plantain leave. The offering is placed outside the house or gate with a solemn prayer to the ancestors to accept the simple offerings and quench their thirst and hunger.

The Manipuries believed the Lam Khunu (wild dove) are incarnations of their deceased ancestors and always regard them as such. Whenever they see the bird around their house, it is believed, the ancestors are visiting them for whatever reason they might thought of.
