Now the castle is closed, the leaves and people are gone - the old stones can talk amongst themselves.  Built in the late 1400s, along with the castle, by Ralph de Boteler.  He made his money fighting in France for Henry VI.   It would have been used to store the rents and 10% of local crops used to support the established Church. Later the castle was owned or gifted variously by Edward IV, Richard III, Henry VII, Henry VIII, Edward VI, Elizabeth I - and so on up to the Civil War in the mid 1600s - when Oliver Cromwell's parliamentations ousted the defending Royalists, defeating Charles I and destroyed the castle.  The stones could tell a lot of tales!
