Fit for purpose?

This beautiful Victorian building is within 5 minutes walk from my office. For the anoraks amongst you, the Palm House, as it's known, was designed by Charles Lanyon and was constructed by Richard Turner (from Dublin) before Kew gardens equivalent, which Turner also constructed!
I am reliably informed that it remains one of the earliest examples of a "curvilinear cast iron glasshouse".
Although the vision came from the Belfast Botanical and Horticultural Society in the 1830s, the two wings were only completed in 1840. Today the cool wing houses all year round displays of colour and scent using plants such as geranium, fuchsia, begonia and built displays. It is a delight to visit as it represents the old and the new of Belfast.
I love the way that this old Palm house protects the many rare and exotic plants all these years on. Why? Because it was fit for purpose - to protect and allow for the nurture of frail plants in a safe place. That remains the purpose today.
It made me think, how fit for purpose is this place we call home? Can we offer a safe place, a nurturing environment to those on the margins, those who are different? If not what can we do to future proof how we do stuff here? That takes one small step and it begins with me and you!
