The Straight Mile

This stretch of the Leeds - Liverpool Canal in Burnley is known as 'The Straight Mile'.
Rather than take a long detour, following the contours around the valley, it was decided to build an embankment, almost a mile long and up to sixty feet high, straight across the town to the opposite hillside.
It is widely regarded as one of the "seven wonders" of the British Waterway System.
