Finally during the afternoon the wind that had been blowing strongly straight at us since before dawn on Thursday began to die down and our view of the mountains of Evvia returned. It was actually quite difficult to hold the camera to take the first several of these shots today.

The prevailing wind hereabouts is from the North. Our house is nestled into the South face of a hill so for most of the time we are mostly sheltered from the wind. The wind blows over the crest of the hill and then down towards our roof. The house is heated with a single log-burning stove and it took a vast number of iterations before the perfect chimney was devised; one which prevented the North wind from blowing down the chimney instead of allowing smoke to rise up through it.

The “H” shape does not work here and neither does any form of rotating chimney top. In complete exasperation one year Spousie simply cut the chimney at 45 degrees in line with the hillside and that works. The North wind whooshes down the hill and the slant on the chimney allows smoke to escape without it being blown back inside.

It does mean however that when we have a wind from the South it is impossible to light a fire. Thankfully Southerlies are warm and a fire has not been essential. Now that the wind has finally dropped the temperatures are forecast to drop also.

By 17:30 we saw enough car headlights along "Millionaire's Row" to check and discovered that yes, it is the eve of Agia Varvara.
