Highway in the Sky

I don't know what was going on above us this afternoon.  A succession of pairs of planes flew over us leaving these tram line contrails in the sky.  Each tramline formed by two planes flying side by side fairly close together absolutely matching each others speed and height.  Perhaps they were military flights?
