Fire

We all live in a house on fire, no fire department to call; no way out, just the upstairs window to look out of while the fire burns the house down with us trapped, locked in it.

It’s getting colder today. There’s a wind gusting and a half-hearted flurry of snow. The chickens strut around, excited when feed is being offered.

And then it’s dark. I stoke the stove, pick up a book, and go to bed.
