Just how do they swallow it?

Stalks and all.
   This male Blackbird had been feasting on Crabbe Apples for quite a few hours.
   Most of the time it was breaking bits off of the apples to eat
But occasionally the fruit came off the branch.And as you can see? He ate it whole.

Took the shot into the light so it went a bit 'High key'!
