Serious negotiations.

When we were here in Phuket last year we made friends with a couple of girls at a nearby beer bar.  We were pleased to see that one of the girls was still there so stopped on the way back from dinner for a beer and a chat.  Whilst there a young girl of about 10 or 12 stopped to sell try and sell me a Lai.  The price asked was 100bht.  Hubby entered into negotiations with her, she suggested a game of rock, paper, scissors, hubby said she might cheat.  The price came down to 70, hubby countered with 50, she said 60, he stuck to 50.  The deal was done 50 baht.  The girl's English was very good and she came over as intelligent.  If selling street wares has helped her to learn English then perhaps it's not such a bad thing. We had a good laugh with her.    I hate to see very young children out selling things on the street at night.   Oh there was also an elderly lady selling fried bugs and frogs.  She had ants, cockroaches and beetles.  We declined.  However we did have an interesting conversation with our friend who had grown up eating these kind of snacks and rat's.   She grew up on a rice farm and as a child would catch insects and rice field rat's.  She did explain that they were totally different from the dirty street rats and bugs.
