Stranger

You can never be too sure
what lurks behind the masks we wear.
What noble ideas, what lofty thoughts,
what petty grudges live there.

We spy the face, hear the voice,
see the rude tongue, the strange grin,
and hazard a guess
at what’s going on within

but we can never know
what it’s really like
to reside
in someone else’s skin.
