Shelter

Built in 1910, these conveniences on either side of a tram shelter are still in use. The building is in Symonds Street near to the corner with the Grafton Bridge. Trams were surplus to requirements a long time ago, and the buses do not stop here; the nearest stop is a bit further along Symonds Street, the other side of the road to the bridge, and just past an on ramp to the motorway leading south from the central city. Pedestrians rather than commuters are the likely clientele for these Edwardian lavatories.

Somewhat more regrettably, the seats inside the shelter seem rarely used. The beautiful mural on the back wall features a kereru (native wood pigeon).

Whether it's because the taggers avoid art on walls, or because graffiti removers are swiftly on the job, this is another mural which has not been defaced by taggers.
