#100days - '92: enter Devlin Waugh, out and proud

In 1992 I was editing the Judge Dredd Megazine, a monthly spin-off from 2000AD but set almost entirely in Dredd's future-shocked world. The Megazine was a success but its frequency killed story momentum when the anthology format meant some strips only got six pages per month. I persuaded management to take the comic fortnightly, relaunching it as Volume 2 Number 1 in May 1992.

I wanted all-new strips for the new volume, something fresh to push the boundaries. Devlin Waugh was the winner, created by writer John Smith and artist Sean Phillips [an example is shown above].

Devlin was the first gay character to appear in 2000AD or the Megazine, an out and proud figure with the body of Arnold Schwarzenegger and the head of Terry Thomas. He was witty, droll, camp and an instant hit with readers. He beat Dredd to best character in reader polls and other awards, a rarity.

Due to John's irregular output as a writer, Devlin hasn't worn out his welcome over the 25 years since first appearing. He still retains a special place in my affections, though Devlin wouldn't give me a second glance...
