Walkies

Today I took an elephant for a walk. Armed with a bucket of chopped fruit: watermelon, pineapple and bananas, we walked for about 20 minutes through the damp muggy afternoon.

To encourage these older ladies to walk, you place pieces of fruit in the curl of their trunks. They then curl around it further and lob it into their beautifully pink mouths.

Every now and then I’d get a little unnerved when i thought too much about the power these creatures have, and although they’ve been broken and de-spirited over the years by the mahouts in the tourist industry, it’s important to remember their natural wild instincts.
