Street scene

Kakopetria is the kind of village where this little path counts as a 'street'. The highest settlement in the Solea valley, its old parts are very old (while its new parts are pretty new). According to the Wikipedia entry, it's renowned for its 'cool and gargling waters'. I think I know what they mean.

The Rough Guide to Cyprus says that Kakopetria means 'wicked rock-pile', linked to the ridge of jagged rocks on which the village was apparently built. Kako indeed means bad or wicked, but for 'petria' my dictionary gives 'blow with a stone'. This fits better with the story of the Petra tou Androinou, a large boulder on which newly-weds would climb for good luck, until it rolled over and crushed one very unlucky couple (see my blipfolio).
