' Kipper Season' Cambridge Market.

Traditionally, on the markets, the time between New Year and March is known as the 'Kipper Season.' It is usually cold and dismal, like today, and often wet and the public are not spending much due to the expense of the Christmas festivities. So the traders survive on what they can and in days of old it was usually kippers which were very cheap. Many of the stalls on our market are closed and it is a good time for the traders to take a holiday somewhere warmer.
