The dropped stitch

What a plant!

Gunnera manicata.
I love these plants!
Impressive from a distance. Spectacular when you get up close and look at the thickness of the bristly stems, feel their weight and see the spikes on the undersides of their leaves. Just now, when most things in the gardens are looking bedraggled and bare, the Gunneras stand out: brown, tree-like spires standing guard over shaggy, wet sleeping animals.

I visited this one today, in Tankerness House Garden, Kirkwall.
