Stars in Southwark

An unexpected delight today was to find an organ recital in Southwark Cathedral at a convenient post-lunch time, and to sit for 40 minutes hypnotised by the gentle movement of this mobile of stars hanging high between us and the altar.

My favourite cathedral didn’t disappoint. The organ reverberated through the honey-coloured stone spaces; people sat, knelt, slept - this last a woman dressed entirely in blankets, her possessions in three bags and a baby buggy, sitting neatly against a wall with her head on her shoulder. Did the music penetrate her sleep?

Who knows. But I saw her later in Borough Market. She wasn’t old.
