King Alfred's Cake

This fallen tree had a few clumps of Daldinia concentrica on it, otherwise known as 'cramp balls', 'coal fungus' or King Alfred's Cake?

According to legend King Alfred hid at a countryside homestead during a war. When it was over he was put in charge of removing the baking from the oven when it was cooked, but he fell asleep. The burnt cake resembled this fungi!
